You made no such distinction. I would agree there is none; police have guns for the same reason people do - they work.
Mistakes happen, but as a society we accept a certain level of risk to live with a certain amount of freedom. Over 40,000 (almost 4x the # of non-suicide gun deaths each year) people die in car accidents each year. We could fix it tomorrow by changing the speed limit to 25mph. We don't because we accept those deaths - not even to respect a civil a right (as is the case with arms) - but because we want to get from point A to point B efficiently.
